Second, count your blessings. Think of last minute travel as a blessing instead of a hassle. One blessing is that the first part of the plane to fill is often coach class. What a blessing - especially on long flights - to get the amenities of first class! Another blessing can result if you wait until the very last second to buy a ticket, when airlines are ready and willing to sell you a ticket at a reasonable price, simply to avoid flying an empty seat on a flight.
Next, remember that flexibility comes into play when the airline you are typically loyal to is not available and you must look elsewhere, at either major carriers or local regional carriers. Creativity combines with flexibility as you must be willing to fly at odd times of the day or on weekdays instead of weekends to ensure that you find the best last minute plane tickets available. Do not get your heart set on a window seat or an aisle seat, other! Flexibility can come about physically as well, as you contort yourself into a middle seat, just to have the privilege of traveling on your last minute plane tickets.
Finally, always shop around. How can you know if you have found a great price unless you have some basis for comparison? Pit the airlines against discount and comparison travel sites to see who has the best fares in the long run. Often, discount sites will buy in bulk, allowing them to resell at a reasonable price. But if you cannot take advantage of bulk pricing, your best bet may be to work with the airline directly to capture the best fares.
